Herzegovinian Cherry Maraska
Although it had been tried to replant the cherry Maraska from homeland Dalmacia to Italy, Slovenia and Austria, the plant disobediently rejected every soil, but gladly accepted herzegovinian karst.
After Pero Barbarić, on his family ranch in Donja Blatnica in 2000, had planted the first orchard of the cherry Maraska in West Herzegovina, from its fruit in 2004 he made an excellent cherry brandy named Montmorency Cherry Liqueur. As soon as the next year, in 2005 a company Nero d.o.o. Mostar was founded, as a producer of that high-quality liqueur in exclusive package according to the highest standards of liqueur production.
That first step in growing and processing of the cherry Maraska in West Herzegovina started now unstoppable process of planting of the new cherry Maraska orchards on family ranches in area of Brotnjo and broader.
Consequently, the company Nero d.o.o. Mostar creates a network of subcontractors that plant new plantations of this valuable fruit, hence till 2008 it has been already planted 15.000 of young plants, and interest for new plantations keeps growing, and the most present fruit culture in Herzegovina is soon going to be the cherry Maraska.
Real possibilities for plantation development of this valuable fruit, especially considering interest of farmers, are extremely high and it is expected that the number of cherry Maraska young plants in Herzegovina is going to outnumber current plants by far.
In Čitluk and Brotnjo «Maraska cherry harvest days» are soon going to gather number of growers and gatherers of rare fruit, the cherry Maraska.
